National Park Paklenica

But this happens rarely, and in the cold winter time. In summer time, there is no bura wind.

1. Easy to reach

Some Greek islands take four hours to reach by plane. The Canaries? More like four-and-a-half. Hvar, Split, Dubrovnik and Pula are all just two-and-a-half hours away or less.

2. Hot weather

Croatia is one of Europe’s sunniest spots. Visitors should expect 12 hours of sunshine a day in May and June, on average, and 13 in July and August. Even in October, the weather remains pleasant, with Dubrovnik offering 11 hours of sunlight and daily averages of 19C.

3. Good value

Even in popular tourist destinations you can still find good value. A beer at all but the trendiest bars in Hvar will only cost the equivalent of a couple of quid; dinner for two at a good restaurant in Split (including wine) will set you back less than 60 EUR. Good value hotels are ubiquitous, as are cheap holiday apartments.

4. Game of Thrones

There is surely some correlation between Croatia’s growing popularity and its starring role in the HBO series Game of Thrones. Croatia has eight national parks, including the Unesco-listed Plitvice Lakes and Krka, both of which are famous for their stunning lakes and waterfalls.

9. Beautiful mountains

The Biokovo mountain range contains Croatia’s second highest peak – Sveti Jure, at 1762 m – but lies just a few miles from the sea. Rise early and follow the steep zig-zagging trail, from the little village of Makar, just above the beach resort of Makarska, up to the peak of Vosac (1422 m), or, if you’re feeling very energetic, Sveti Jure. It’s a spellbinding route, scattered with wildflowers and butterflies, sweet-smelling pine trees and limestone boulders. Then head back down for a refreshing dip in the sea and a well earned gelato (the ice cream here is as good as you’ll find on the other side of the Adriatic).

10. Museums

The Museum of Broken Relationships, in Zagreb, features seemingly mundane and insignificant objects accompanied by captions that explain their relevance in a failed relationship. It explores the “love, pain, drama, irony, humour and reconciliation” of break-ups, and has proven so popular that a second branch opened in Los Angeles last year.

11. White stone that made the White House

In addition to the photogenic beach of Zlatni Rat, the island of Brac is famous for its glorious white stone, which was used in the construction of Diocletian’s Palace, and, far more recently, The White House in Washington DC.

12. Summer festivals

Croatia hosts numerous open-air cultural festivals during the summer, the best known being the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, staged from mid-July until mid-August and attracting well-known international performers. Tiny Motovun, a hilltop village in Istria, hosts a film festival each year, with parties held within its medieval walls each night. There are also plenty of contemporary music festivals. Some of the biggest are the Love International Festival at Tisno near Zadar, Fresh Island on Zrce beach in Novalja on the island of Pag; the Dimensions Festival and the Outlook Festival, both at Fort Punta Christo near Pula.

13. It’s the birthplace of Marco Polo

Marco Polo was Croatian Traveler and Explorer

born on the island of Korcula  in 1254. (in Venetian times it was part of the Venetian Republic and Korcula was called Curzola). Korcula takes big pride in being a birthplace of this worldly renowned traveler and to this day a surname Polo (another variant is De Polo) is present in Korčula. Marco’s father surname was Pilic, he was Dalmatian merchant from Korcula. Even today surname Pilic is widely spread Croatian surname. In time of Venetians ruling over Dalmatia, most of merchants and higher class people italianized their names and surnames into Italian variants, so Pilic changed his surname into Polo (in Croatian language Pilic means chicken, and also in Italian Pollo means chicken).
His birthplace house is restaurated on the remains of the Polo’s property, today turned into museum of Marco Polo and available for visitors. Despite its rather plain interior, the tower (loggia) on the house allows for a panoramic view of Korčula, stretching from east to west.  The Museum tells story about one of the first Europeans to travel the famous Silk Road trade route and many other travels of Marco Polo that are famous throughout the world. One of the most interesting stories is the one with Asian emperor Kublai Khan. He heard many stories about Marco Polo and wanted to meet him in person. Marco agreed to meet him and to tell him all the stories about his travels. Marco Polo served Kublai Khan as one of his important advisors. But after some time Marco was fed up and asked the emperor his permission to go back to his beloved Korčula and Venice. During his stay he fell in love with a young princess that was promised to the emperor, but she was in love with Marco and wanted to go with him. Marco found a way to take her with him. They sailed for three months around and he left the princess in Tabriz from where he proceeded his journey home. This was his last mission he had.

Museum of Marco Polo was opened to the public in 2011. in Chinese town of Yangzhou, where former President of Croatia Stjepan Mesic was invited to the opening ceremony and informed the world that Marco Polo was Croatian born in Korcula town in 1254.

Number of serious scientific researches confirm Marco Polo’s Croatian origin.

Analysis of Hilda Marija Foley,
North Tustin, CA 92705, US, wrote in 2007.:

Records show that Marco Polo’s father Nicolo (Croatian: Nikola) and uncle Maffeo (Croatian: Mate) Pilic were rich merchants from Sibenik in Dalmatia, then under Venetian rule, who went to Venice as established businessmen. All of the merchant and nobility class of that time used the Italian version of their names, so Pilic, which is Croatian for chicken, became Polo in Italian. The Pilic/Polo family coat of arms shows a crown and four chickens.

The medieval archives of Venice are among the best in Europe, yet there is no mention of Marco Polo’s birth, only citizen of Venice and his date of death. There is a quay in Venice near the Duke’s Palace still called Schiavoni (“Slavs”) as Croatians/Dalmatians were called at that time, where many Croatian seamen and merchants arrived from Dalmatia. The Polo family lived in this Schiavoni section of Venice were the Croatians had their churches, school and Guild Hall. Today there are still Croatian families named Polo, de Polo and Pilic in Croatia, but according to Italian sources there are no Polos in Italy.

Korcula, either by force or willingly, accepts the previous duke of Dubrovnik, Marsilie Zorzi, a Venetian nobleman, as its duke in 1254. In that same year Marko Polo was born.

The Polo family is much respected in Korcula; living over centuries in the town of Korcula. It produced over the years numerous shipbuilders, smiths, stone-masons, tradesmen, priests, and public notaries. Marko’s father Nikola and uncle Mate founded their trading outpost in Korcula, and the members of the Polo family were guardians of the walls around the town of Korcula. But, for the skilful tradesmen Nikola and Mate, Korcula was only the starting point of their business trade and their adventurous life. Marko’s father and uncle penetrated deeply into Asia. They erected a tower and founded their own trading outpost in the town of Sudac on the Crimea. They had their main trade centre in Constantinople, to which many Korcula businessmen and shipbuilders were travelling and for some time they were living there. Mate and Nikola Polo traded successfully with the Persians. They were cognisant with the secret ways which led through Syria and Iraq as far as the coasts of Persian Gulf. They also knew the areas where the precious pearl oysters could be found. Wherever they ventured they were made welcome as people who were “noble-minded, wise and reasonable”. They knew the routes that led to the fur traders of southern Siberia. They had trade contacts with the dignitaries of various Tartar peoples, and they reached the court of the Great Kublai Khan in China. They had started their journey before Marko Polo was born. The successful Korcula tradesmen feeling secure in their centuries-old native soil of Korcula, left their family and still unborn son Marko, as they gazed towards the Far East searching there for a realization of their dream of the rich life. Their ideas of fusing the cultural structures of the West and the East also decreed the destiny of Nikola’s son, Marko Polo, from the day of his birth.

Marko achieved the usual education of a young nobleman of his age. He learned a lot about classical writers, he understood the text of the Bible and knew the basic theology of the Roman Catholic Church. He spoke French and Italian, especially the trade vocabulary, and was skilful in keeping business books. The Church books and songs in Croatian from Marko’s time have been preserved in Korcula, and it is most probable that Marko knew the Croatian language as spoken by the inhabitants of Korcula. That knowledge was to help him very much when he traveled with his father and uncle across south Russia, then inhabited by Slavonic tribes and under Tartar reign. The European languages which Marko learned in his youth were to be the basis for the development of his polyglot talents when he came in touch, in the Far East, with Chinese; this, too, he learned successfully.

Korcula first had a bishop in 1300, which contributed a great deal to the writing and maintenance of the archives, both Church and secular, and some well-known families kept their own archives. Thus, the always rich Korcula tradition passed on by word of mouth, received also written support for the preservation of the collective communal memory, thus giving birth to capable men ready for the adventures of body and spirit in distant worlds.

The oldest written document in which the Polo family is mentioned is a deed of gift dated March 14th 1400. The then duke of Korcula, Mihajlo Musi and three Korcula judges donated to a certain Joannis a building in the town quarter on the eastern side, near the house of Bogavaz Dupolo. It is the exact location of the present “tower of Marko Polo”; from which one can see clearly all the Peljesac Channel; the route of trading vessels from Hellenic times to the present day.

A somewhat older document, from 1430, speaks about the life and work of members of the Polo family in Korcula in the 13th century, mostly featuring the centuries-old tradition of building Korcula style wooden boats, well known in the whole of the Mediterranean. That document is to be found in the private archives of the Kapor family in Korcula. In this, Mate Polo applies to the community of Korcula for a piece of land for his ship-yard, near the place where his grandfathers were building boats. That document is concrete evidence that the Polos were living in Korcula and building the boats even before Marko Polo was alive. Korcula shipyards were situated both on the eastern and western shores adjacent to the fortified medieval town. In this a way, the shipbuilders, working in the vicinity of the city walls, and living inside them, were able to defend their town in case of enemy attack. In the list mentioning ship-builders in 1594, there are 16 ship-rights from the Polo family, and in the 1810 list, 22. From a legal case of 1778, we learn that the name of the owner of a shipyard in the eastern suburb was Marko Depolo. As the skills of ship-building, as well as the ownership of the shipyards, were passing from generation to generation, from father to son, various families were for centuries using the same plots for the needs of their workshops. It is evident from the land-registry maps of the past century, and from photos exhibited in the City Museum that Mihovil Depolo, Nikola’s son, (1864-1943) was the owner of one of the bigger shipyards on the eastern side (“Borak”), and that Lovro Depolo (1853-1943) was the owner of the biggest shipyard of all on the western side of the town of Korcula (“Sv. Nikola”).

The Korculans were not only outstanding ship-builders but also experienced seamen. They excelled, too, as good warriors in many sea battles; among them, members of the Depolo family. Archive material and memorials confirm that the duke of Korcula, Andrea Zane, in 1584, entrusted, among others, Jerolim, Pavle and Nikola Polo, with finding crews for the participation of the town of Korcula in one of the sea battles. The emphasis will go to the safety and proximity of Croatia as a tourist destination, the richness of Croatian tourism, unique heritage, beautiful nature, and diverse gastronomy, highlighting the diversity of travel and tourism products that the country offers. CNTB and ECTAA will work hand in hand to not only promote Croatia as one of the most attractive destinations in Europe but also as one of the safest. Next year, Black Tomato predicts Croatia to be quieter than ever. Devoid of the usual cruise ships and throngs of tourists, Spring 2021 offers a rare chance to have this usually-heaving destination all to oneself, making it a top destination for 2021.

Croatian National Tourist Board (CNTB) is currently implementing a new campaign for Croatian tourism in 2021 across social media, called “Croatia Full of New Beginnings” combined with the label Croatia Wish List 2021, which aims to promote Croatia through new beginnings and positive wishes. Goal is to maintain the visibility and presence of Croatia on its most important emitting markets by presenting more undiscovered locations and proposals for planning a holiday.

Ston

Ston is a small town on Peljesac Peninsula, situated about 54 km from Dubrovnik. Ston is by and large known for three things – its very well preserved town walls, its salt works, and its mussels. The walls are much longer than those of its more famous neighbour, Dubrovnik, at 5 km in length. This makes them the longest defensive structure in Europe; they are sometimes referred to as the ‘European Walls of China”. It is known as a gourmet paradise. From archeological traces the waters of Mali Ston bay from ancient times, cultivated oysters and ate in honor of Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty born from shells.

Milna on island Brac

Milna or as the Venetians called it “Valle di mille navi” (the bay of a thousand ships) is located on the north-west side of the island. Milna is one of those typical Mediterranean fishing villages they don’t make anymore. Lying on the west coast of Brac Island and 20 km southwest of Supetar, the harbour of Milna is drop-dead gorgeous as it digs into the island like a spoon. To each side of the harbour stretch sand and pebble beaches including the cove of Vlaska. Stone houses along the beautiful long coastline are small masterpieces of plebeian architecture.

Island Vis

In many ways, Vis is the most fascinating of all the Croatian islands. Primosten

Primosten is a small town located between Sibenik and Split. Primosten attracts tourists with its interesting architecture, beautiful beaches and crystal clear waters. One of the main sights is the 15-century, white stone Church of St George, and its belltower and cemetery. The Our Lady of Loretto statue – a shrine to the Virgin Mary – is located on Gaj hill, above Primosten. At 17 metres tall, it is an impressive structure although the site also offers wonderful views to the town. There is an excellent selection of fish, seafood and steak choices, as well as the carpaccio or tuna tartare. Do not forget sampling some Croatian wine from their fantastic wine list!

Jelsa on island Hvar

The town Jelsa is located in the middle of the island of Hvar and is mild, clean and open hearted to the guests and travelers. Labin

The medieval town of Labin is situated on the hill above Rabac. The rich cultural and architectural heritage of Labin is enlivened by number of art ateliers and by the bustling youth gathering in the coffee bars scattered around the old town. The Old Town is very colorful, offering interesting architecture with Baroque, Renaissance and Gothic elements in many churches, palaces and houses. Omis

The town of Omis is settled in centre of southern Croatian region of Dalmatia. The Crikvenica Town Museum houses collections of items from Crikvenica and the nearby region, including pieces of archaeological and natural history interest. Following rule by various groups, including the Croatian-Hungarian Kingdom, Korcula became part of the Venetian Empire in 1420 – which was the case of much of Dalmatia. (Prior to this it is believed that explorer Marco Polo was born on the island.)

After the fall of the Venetian Empire in 1797, the island came to be under the control of assorted groups once more – including the Austrians, French and Russians, and was even ruled by the British between 1813 to 1815. Led by Commander Peter Lowen, they undertook significant building projects including building a huge fortress on the hill above Korcula Town. The island was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1815 to 1918, when it became occupied by Italy until 1921, then becoming part of Yugoslavia.

During World War II, the island fell to the Italians once more (in 1941), before the Germans occupied the island in December 1943. The town of Korcula was severely bombed by the Allies, which destroyed most of the important buildings there.

There is also a 20th century British connection with the island: the late Fitzroy Maclean, the Scottish politician, soldier, adventurer and writer, had a house there (still used by his family today). It was personally given to him by President Tito and was the only house owned by a foreigner in the former Yugoslavia until Croatian independence.

Korcula Town

Korcula is a historic fortified town on the protected east coast of the island of Korcula. The old city is surrounded by walls, and the streets are arranged in a herringbone pattern allowing free circulation of air but protecting against strong winds.

Korcula Town is the main town on the island, with a population of about 3000 inhabitants. The main feature/sight of the whole town is Korcula Old Town – a medieval walled town with its towers, numerous buildings and monuments, cafés, restaurants, hotels, galleries, open-air cinema and more. Korcula is very popular for visitors as a central location from which they explore the rest of the island and its surroundings.

Korcula Old Town is the main attraction of Korcula Town – a medieval walled city positioned on an oval-shaped swelling of land pointing deep into Peljesac Channel. The Old Town itself is grooved with a succession of narrow streets that branch off the spine of the main street like the fish bone. The fishbone shape was used in Korcula Old Town design to reduce the effects of wind and sun and provide citizens with sheltered and comfortable accommodation.

The architecture in the Old Town is mainly influenced by Venetian Renaissance. The Old Town centre is dominated by the splendid St Mark’s Cathedral built in the Gothic-Renaissance style, completed in the 15th century (by Marko Andrijic) at the place of other church from the 13th century.

The Korcula Town Museum is also interesting to visit as it gives insights to Korcula’s history, as it displays Korculan stone carvings, Lumbarda Psephism and Ancient Greece artefacts, shipbuilding historical items, Renaissance Architectural Carvings and Coats of Arms Exhibits etc. At night well known Moreska Sword Dance, a colourful, choreographed sword dance is also worth seeing. The historic town of Korcula is on UNESCO’s- tentative list.

How to reach Korcula

Korcula Town is the place where the main coastal ferry lines that sail from Rijeka to Dubrovnik stops via Split and Hvar. Another good way to reach Korcula Town from Split is catamaran passenger ferries that sail from Split via Hvar to Korcula Town. The alternative way of reaching Korcula Town is via Vela Luka (50km west of Korcula Town) where car ferry from Split to Vela Luka as well as catamaran ferry sails daily. In Vela Luka, all ferries are met by bus links to other places on the island, including Korcula Town.

To reach Korcula Town from Dubrovnik you can use the main coastal ferry lines that sail from Dubrovnik via Mljet to Rijeka, stopping in Korcula Town or by catamaran ferry “Nona Ana” that sails from Dubrovnik to Korcula and stopping at Mljet. There is also a daily bus connection to Korcula Town from Dubrovnik. The bus departs daily at 3 pm and it runs along Peljesac Peninsula arriving in Orebic where it joins 15-minute ferry ride to Korcula Town (Domince). Driving to Korcula Town can be nice too although not a very green way of transport. The good route to take is to drive to Ploce and take a ferry to Trpanj. From Trpanj drive towards Orebic and take a ferry from Orebic to Korcula (Domince – 3 km outside Korcula Town). Driving from Dubrovnik, drive along Croatian coast until you reach Doli, and sign to turn left to the Peljesac Peninsula. Drive along Peljesac ( about 60 km) to Orebic and take a ferry from Orebic to Korcula (Domince – 3 km outside Korcula Town).
