Discover the Flavors of Dalmatian Cuisine: A Culinary Journey Through Croatia’s Coastal Gem

As the shimmering Adriatic Sea caresses the sun-kissed shores of Croatia, the Dalmatian region emerges as a treasure trove for travelers seeking breathtaking scenery and rich cultural heritage. But beyond its stunning seascapes and historic towns, Dalmatia is also celebrated for its vibrant gastronomy, which reflects a harmonious blend of tradition, local ingredients, and Mediterranean flair. Join us as we explore the delightful world of Dalmatian cuisine, where every dish tells a story of the land and its people.

A Culinary Heritage Rooted in Nature

Dalmatian cuisine is deeply rooted in the region’s natural bounty. With an abundance of fresh seafood, locally grown vegetables, and aromatic herbs, the food here embodies the essence of the Mediterranean lifestyle. The proximity to the Adriatic Sea means that fish and shellfish take center stage in many traditional dishes. From succulent grilled fish to mouthwatering seafood risottos, each plate captures the flavors of the ocean, expertly prepared by local chefs.

Signature Dishes to Savor

– **Peka**: This traditional Dalmatian dish is a must-try for any food lover. Peka involves slow-cooking meat—often lamb or octopus—with seasonal vegetables under a bell-shaped lid called a “peka.” The result is tender, flavorful meat infused with the natural aromas of herbs and smoke, served alongside roasted potatoes or polenta.

– **Soparnik**: A unique regional specialty, soparnik is a savory pie filled with Swiss chard, onions, and olive oil, encased in thin layers of dough. This dish hails from the village of Dugi Rat and is often enjoyed as a snack or appetizer, showcasing the simplicity and richness of Dalmatian ingredients.

– **Dalmatian Prosciutto**: This famous cured ham, known as “pršut,” is a staple of Dalmatian charcuterie boards. Aged to perfection, it boasts a rich, savory flavor that pairs beautifully with local cheeses and olives. Enjoy it as part of a traditional “meze” platter alongside a glass of local wine.

– **Seafood Specialties**: With such proximity to the sea, Dalmatia offers a plethora of seafood dishes. From fresh grilled sardines to delicate calamari and octopus salad, seafood lovers will find themselves in culinary paradise. Don’t miss out on trying “brodet,” a hearty fish stew made with a variety of catch, simmered in a rich tomato sauce.

Embrace the Dalmatian Wine Culture

Dalmatia is also renowned for its wine production, with vineyards dotting the hillside landscapes. The region’s unique climate and soil contribute to the creation of exceptional wines, particularly indigenous varieties like Plavac Mali and Pošip. Visitors can savor these wines at local taverns, known as “konobas,” where the warm ambiance and friendly locals create an inviting atmosphere.

A Feast for the Senses

Dining in Dalmatia is not just about the food; it’s an experience that engages all the senses. Many restaurants and konobas offer stunning views of the sea or the charming cobblestone streets, making each meal a feast for the eyes as well. Whether you’re enjoying a sunset dinner in Split or a seaside lunch in Dubrovnik, the ambiance enhances the flavors of the dishes.

Conclusion: Dalmatian Culinary Adventure Awaits

Traveling to Dalmatia is an invitation to indulge in a culinary adventure that celebrates the region’s rich heritage and natural resources. From traditional recipes passed down through generations to contemporary twists on classic dishes, Dalmatian cuisine offers something for every palate. So, as you plan your visit to this coastal paradise, be sure to set aside time to savor the delightful flavors that make Dalmatia a true gastronomic destination. Bon appétit!

Meat, olive oil, fine wine, cheese and other delicacies will create an unforgettable menu that will conquer your senses.
Let your taste travel across centuries of tradition and relish every moment.
Before you start your meal try some of aperitifs like famous Maraschino of Zadar or brandy’s made of pears, plums, figs, healing herbs. Continue your meal with great starters such as cheese from Pag, prosciutto from Drniš, kulen – spicy flavored sausage from Slavonia or try oysters and mussels from Ston and truffles from Istria.
Get to the main course and decide if you want to try meat dishes like turkey with mlinci, pašticada from Split, lamb from Pag island, sarma or try meals from peka – a specific type of roasting under the bell at the fireplace. If you are not in the mood for meat, choose from some of the delicious fish menu’s. Brodet is a fish stew made of several types of fish, maybe an octopus with potatoes under the above mentioned peka or grilled fish served with Swiss chard and boiled potatoes will be enough to intrigue your your taste buds.
Either you choose meat or fish it is inevitable to top that all of with virgin olive oil and fine local wine. To finish this Mediterranean feast in proper way try pastry desserts like kroštule, fritule, salenjaci, orahnjača or makovnjača, or some traditional cakes like rožata, paradižot, Skradin cake or cremeschnitte from Samobor.

Zadar Croatia Traveler Info

Zadar is one of the oldest cities on the Adriatic. Its almost three thousand years origins are the reason why Zadar is full of historical and cultural monuments. Today Zadar is a preserved monument of different historical times and cultures that have placed their mark in the urban appearance. Full of archives, museums and libraries, it is the keeper of literary and musical treasure and it is also the city inside which is the oldest University among Croatians (1396).

Zadar and its surroundings are at the very top of the Croatian tourist offer. That tourist offer is diverse and rich with seaside and countryside sights that are worth visiting. Zadar area is made of archipelago that counts 24 bigger and about 300 smaller islets and rocks, 3 nature parks – Telašćica, Velebit and Vransko lake and 5 national parks—Paklenica, Plitvice lakes, Kornati Islands, Krka and Sjeverni Velebit.

How to get to Zadar?

Zadar is an easily reached destination by land, sea and air. It has a good road connection with all the bigger cities in Croatia and Europe. Airport in Zadar is located only 9 kilometers from the city center and the ferry port is newly built and has sufficient capacity for tourist and local needs. You can plan your route via michellin route planner.

What to see in Zadar?

First of all, you must see unforgettable sunsets over Zadar! Words can not describe this, not even photos. This is MUST SEE. I am local, living in Split, I have seen this magic sunset twice so far. Colors are spectacularly intensive and sunset is spread on the entire sky so you are looking at 180 degrees wide and all over the sky.

When in Zadar there are many things to see. Here are the ones that are definitely a must see.
Sea Organ is on the western end of Promenade. The organ looks like a series of broad steps that are leading down into the water. This site is a magnificent blend of human ideas and skills accompanied with the energy of the sea, waves, tide and flood that create pleasant notes. The sea organ never sounds the same twice because the sea is always shifting and changing. Each sound you hear is completely unique. The architect Nikola Bašić that built the sea organs got a European prize for Urban Public Space built.
The Greeting to the Sun on the end of Promenade and Zadar Peninsula show a true symbiosis of nature with modern architecture. Solar modules collect the sunlight throughout the day and make a symbolic communication with light, just like the Sea organs do with the waves.
The forum is a place where the church of Saint Donat and the Archbishop’s Palace are located. It is a municipal square from the time when Romans lived there and it was built in 1st century BC.
Church of Saint Donat is a symbol of the city of Zadar. It originates from the early Middle ages, from the 9th century and it is a best preserved monument from that time. Holy Masses and musical performances are still held in this church due to its extraordinary acoustic features.
St. Mary’s Church and Convent was constructed on 1091 and together with St. Donat church is one of the oldest preserved churches. Its most beautiful part is a bell tower built in Romanesque style. You can see in the church a permanent exhibition of the objects that date back to the 8th century and are one of the most valuables in Croatia.
Reactor’s Palace is cultural-historical complex that is renovated I 2017 and it became a new tourist attraction in Zadar. It holds a museum space, an atrium, concert hall, halls for temporary exhibitions, video gallery and spaces for creational workshops. Modernly renovated Rector´s Palace became a must-see-place in Zadar and won the annual Croatian tourist award in the category of cultural attractions in 2017.
Gold and Silver of Zadar is a permanent display located in the Benedictine Convent of St. Mary. It is set on the surface area of about 1200 square meters in modernly equipped halls. This priceless treasure has been preserved by the Benedictine nuns and holds many great works of the locally known and unknown masters of Zadar region.

To experience all beauties of Zadar, pamper yourself in one of our Zadar area villas for rent.

Why visit Split?

Split is a unique city, filled with various types of fun, explore Split gastronomy culture and heritage! It suitable for literally everyone. Split is known as a child-friendly city so families with children are very welcome. For those with a bit of adventure spirit Split and its surrounding have a rich offer of active holiday programs. And for those who want a quite holiday with just chilling and enjoying the sun and the beaches, Split has a lot to offer. Many diverse beaches, from ones that are in touch with nature like those in the Forrest park Marjan (yes, Split has it’s own Forrest park inside!) , to the ones that are like urban beaches with bars and children playgrounds on them. The common thing for both of them is that once you get there you can enjoy the peace and tranquility without even noticing that you are a few steps from the center of this big city. From all of those things that are said you can conclude that Split is much more than glorious architectural scenery and vacation destination. It is also great starting point for exploring Croatia thanks to its good connection with the inland and the islands.
The citizens of Split often say that “There is no place like Split” which we have to agree with.

Which tourist attractions to visit?
You are planning your trip and are wondering what attractions you can see in Split? Here is a list of fascinating things you can visit.

HOW OLD IS DIOCLETIAN PALACE IN SPLIT?

A walk through the ancient city can take you through time, so prepare yourselves to go to fourth century AD. The Diocletian’s palace is among the best preserved monuments of the Roman building heritage in the world. Today, after 1700 years, the remains of the palace are part of the historic core of Split, which in 1979 was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. A thing you can’t find anywhere in the world is a fact that people still live and work inside the palace. The citizens of Split over centuries have been keeping the tradition of living the life inside the palace, adapting it a bit to modern life needs, but the outlines of the palace remained untouched. The outside architecture of the palace with its stone walls is consisted of sixteen towers projecting form every side of the palace. Inside the palace you can see the emperors apartments, living space, squares, churches, museums, shops, restaurants, etc. Do not miss out the chance to visit the Cellars of the Diocletian’s Palace, and to take a walk trough the filming locations of the Game of Thrones series.

Which SACRAL FACILITIES are in Split?

Croatians are Catolics. Country has a great heritage of sacral facilities. Therefore Split as a second largest city in modern Croatia and one of the oldest cities in Europe takes a big pride in its sacral heritage. Many of its churches and monastery’s are located in reach of the city center.

Church and Monastery of St. Francis is built in the old early Christian site located on the Western part of the Riva, just a few steps from the outside walls of the Diocletian’s palace. In the 13th century the Little brothers of St Francis inhabit the Church and have been living and serving there since then. In the Church and the Monastery are located the thumbs of prominent citizens of Split, like the father of Croatian literature Marko Marulić, and one of the greatest Croatian politicians Ante Trumbić, whose sarcophagus is the work of famous Croatian sculpturer Ivan Meštović.

Franciscan Church and Monastery of St. Anthony is built in the 11th century on the north side of the Split peninsula. A cloister with a square tower on the west side was a part of defense complex protecting the church and the monastery from the Turkish invasion. In the 18th century bell tower was added on the south side of the church. This complex is home to many valuable artworks and historic documents, among which is an image made by Venetian master Girolama de Santa Crocea in 1549 showing the city as it lays in the hands of its patron St. Domnius. Maybe an even more interesting thing is a rare description of Islamic prophet Muhammad, whose character should not be shown according to Koran.

Church of Holy Trinity is situated near the above mentioned Franciscan Church, at the proximity of Poljud stadium. This is a small but adorable church built between the 8th and 11th century. It is a six foil type of building with semicircular arches lined around an irregular circle. This church has been added into the register of the most valuable Croatian Cultural Heritage, of the highest category.

Church of St. Philip Neri A pastor of Split and a Bishop of Makarska together decided in 1672 to establish a Philippine congregation and build a church dedicated to St. Philip Neri. They decided to build it on the site of the Papalić house, which was donated by the nobleman Frane Soppe Papalić, together with another two houses bought beside it. The building of the church began in 1679 and was finished the year after. This is a modest, simple church, but very sacral and peaceful.

Church of St. Martin is in the northern part of the Diocletian Palace, within the wall over the Golden Gate. The Church today is a replica of an early Christian Church from the 6th century, with a pre-romanesque altar partition from the 11th century. This smallest and one of the oldest churches in Split is only 1.64m wide and 10m long, and is considered the most preserved sacral monument. Its location was originally used as a passageway for the guards guarding the northern entrance to the Diocletian Palace and later was converted to church.

Small Churches on the Marjan Hill
If there is anything determining Marjan, hill-symbol on the west side of the Split peninsula, just as much as its dense pine forest, countless trails and recreational facilities, is a series of Marjan small churches and chapels. Built during the time when Marjan was a spiritual haven for the citizens of Split who expressed their faith by going on a pilgrimage to their holly hill. Those sometimes miniature churches were one of the most important witnesses of the way life developed in Split. For those fond of taking nature walks, tour of this spiritual circle can be a great opportunity for sightseeing Marjan and enjoying the peace offered by this hill to the citizens of Split and their guests.

Which are famous SQUARES in Split?

Since medieval time squares have been a place where people get together, socialize and go to buy their needed groceries. That culture in Split hasn’t vanished, people still get together there, drink coffee, go shopping. Some of the most magnificent squares here are Prokurative, Pjaca and Vocni Trg (Fruits square). They are all well preserved and reflect the ancient spirit that was once there.

Prokurative is a square located west of the Riva. Name of this square comes from its neo-Renaissance buildings surrounding the square on tree sides. It is built on the idea to resemble Venice St. Marks Square. The square is only open on the south side providing a beautiful view of the harbor and the waterfront. It is a beautiful place to drink coffee, have lunch, relax and to take photos!
Pjaca or People’s Square is first mentioned in 13th century as first inhabited part of Split outside the Diocletian Palace, leaning to its western wall. On the outskirts of the Pjaca lived the noble families of Split. Already for centuries the Pjaca is the central stage of the city life. There in the Gothic building of the Old Town Hall, today an exhibition center, was the seat of the city’s authority, and is still beautiful and preserved. The city clock has been ticking for centuries on Pjaca, unique by his 24 instead of 12 digits. In the surrounding cafes, restaurants and bars the citizens of Split could always find a place to rest, meet, be seen and see others, go through the most important events of the city. Every building on Pjaca has its story, each is a witness of history and the spirit of the city.
Voćni trg (Fruit square) is maybe the most beautiful one in the city. It got its name by the colorful market where women from surrounding villages came to sell their fruit. There are several landmarks decorating this not so large square. The biggest is definitely the Venetian tower, the leftover of the former fortress built in 15th century. Surrounding facades built in Baroque style give a picturesque sense of the old times. The statue of Marko Marulić in the center of square celebrates the most important Croatian philosopher and intellectual of 15th century. Square is thriving with city life in bars, restaurants and exclusive shops.
Riva is definitely a must see, or even better said, a must experience in Split. This promenade is a heart and soul of Split. You must have heard a well known sentence “All roads lead to Rome”, well, the citizens of Split often say that all roads lead to Riva. In any hour of the day you will always find people sitting, drinking coffee, dining, relaxing. In the evening it converts to a great location for spending a night out with your friends. It is a center and a great starting point to explore city’s offer. Located on the entrance to the Diocletian Palace it is a venue for numerous cultural and entertainment events. The time when Riva and the whole city reaches all of its glory is definitely Sudamja, a celebration dedicated to St. Dominius, the patron saint of Split. It is celebrated in the beginning of May, and if you are planning your trip to Croatia in off season we recommend visiting Split at this time.

Which NATURAL BEAUTIES are in SPLIT?

Split is a city of natural beauty! If you are wondering how one urban big city can be filled with natural and well preserved surrounding, you can find an answer right here in Split.

Marjan, the hill that overlooks the city has always been the most impressive part of Split imagery. Such a harmony between natural and urban is rarely found; on one side the densely populated city in all of its glory, and on the other a peninsula of almost pristine nature, a protected Forrest park. A climb up to Marjan is easily accessible from Riva and is easy to get to. You can go by foot or by a car, but take in mind if you are going by car you can have problems finding a parking space and the road takes you only half way to the peak. If you are going on foot, it is an easy walk up the well arranged walkway among which there are few sceneries overlooking the city and the nearby islands Brač, Hvar, Šolta.
Marjan offers to its visitors peace and tranquility, recreation and entertainment with natural beaches, pathways and trim-trails among which are many sacral churches and secular architecture.
If you are looking for a place from which Split can be seen in all of its glory, but you also want to experience entirely different side of this densely populated and tourism oriented city, visit Marjan.

Sustipan, the first Split’s cemetery at that time, is located on the southwest cape of the Split harbor. Do not be frightened by the fact that it was a cemetery because in the past it was demolished and turned into a glorious park, a little green oasis in proximity of Marjan. The reefs of Sustipan meet the sea giving you a breathtaking view towards deep sea and the islands in front of Split.

Where are THE BEACHES in SPLIT?

Split as an urban city has a surprising clean sea and diverse beaches in its offer. If you are seeking quiet and natural ones try out Bene or Kašjuni beaches. Both are located on the Marjan hill, a protected Forrest park which reeks of fresh air and smell of century old pines. Get away from the city rush and enjoy the peace.
Bene is a beach very suitable for families because of its offer. It is filled with numerous additional facilities; a restaurant, tennis courts, playgrounds for children, showers, changing cabins, etc. Next to the beach is a part adapted for disabled, including a lift aiding the disabled on their way into the sea.
Kašjuni located on the west part of the Marjan hill is popular for families with children. The beach has a shallow waters, small pebble stones, a coffee shop and a changing cabins.

If you want to go to the beach that is not far from the urban part, we recommend you to try beaches Bačvice, Firule and Žnjan. Regardless to its distance to the livable part of the city, once you get there you won’t even have feeling that you are in approximate intermediate of the city.
Bačvice is a phenomenon of nature, a sandy beach at the heart of the city, in the vicinity of the city harbor. It can accommodate over ten thousand people and often it is called a Split version of Copacabana. Bačvice today represents a best known promenade for all generations, and during night it is a favorite center of nightlife.
Firule with its fine sand and natural shelter have always proven to be especially interesting for families with young children. A recreational side of Firule grew more popular as the tennis center was organized here. Many of popular Croatian tennis players like Goran Ivanišević and Mario Ančić learned their first serves here.
Žnjan became very popular among the citizens of Split with the arrival of John Paul II to Split in 1998. In that year it was well landscaped for his arrival and to this day is well maintained.
Besides being an ideal promenade and a leisure destination for the citizens of Split, it thrives with restaurants, bars, coffee shops, playgrounds, trampolines for children and other facilities.

15 reasons to book your vacation in Croatia:

1. Easy to reach

Some Greek islands take four hours to reach by plane. The Canaries? More like four-and-a-half. Hvar, Split, Dubrovnik and Pula are all just two-and-a-half hours away or less.

2. Hot weather

Croatia is one of Europe’s sunniest spots. Visitors should expect 12 hours of sunshine a day in May and June, on average, and 13 in July and August. Even in October, the weather remains pleasant, with Dubrovnik offering 11 hours of sunlight and daily averages of 19C.

3. Good value

Even in popular tourist destinations you can still find good value. A beer at all but the trendiest bars in Hvar will only cost the equivalent of a couple of quid; dinner for two at a good restaurant in Split (including wine) will set you back less than 60 EUR. Good value hotels are ubiquitous, as are cheap holiday apartments.

4. Game of Thrones

There is surely some correlation between Croatia’s growing popularity and its starring role in the HBO series Game of Thrones. Among the attractions to have featured are Dubrovnik, whose city walls and forts became King’s Landing; beautiful Trsteno Arboretum on the outskirts of the city, which becomes the Red Keep’s gardens; the Fortress of Klis, which is used for exterior shots of Meereen; and St Dominic Monastery in Trogir, which appears as the city of Qarth.

5. Roman ruins

The remains of Diocletian’s Palace in Split, another Game of Thrones filming location, is now the buzzing heart of the city. Among the ancient columns, temples, walls and underground cellars that once made up the Roman emperor’s retirement home, you’ll find dozens of hidden bars, restaurants and shops.

6. Pula amphiteatre

The port city of Pula in Istria is noted for its first-century Roman amphitheatre, one of the best preserved in the world. Time your visit to the city to coincide with its annual film festival (held in July, next week, as it stands), which features screenings inside the ruin, or look out for one of its regular musical concerts.

7. Magnificent beaches

Croatia is all about picturesque pebbled beaches, lapped by crystal clear water. Zlatni Rat is the best known, and adorns just about every travel brochure, so expect crowds, but there are gorgeous hidden spots on the mainland, such as Nugal, just south of Makarska.

8. National parks

Croatia has eight national parks, including the Unesco-listed Plitvice Lakes and Krka, both of which are famous for their stunning lakes and waterfalls.

9. Beautiful mountains

The Biokovo mountain range contains Croatia’s second highest peak – Sveti Jure, at 1762 m – but lies just a few miles from the sea. Rise early and follow the steep zig-zagging trail, from the little village of Makar, just above the beach resort of Makarska, up to the peak of Vosac (1422 m), or, if you’re feeling very energetic, Sveti Jure. It’s a spellbinding route, scattered with wildflowers and butterflies, sweet-smelling pine trees and limestone boulders. Then head back down for a refreshing dip in the sea and a well earned gelato (the ice cream here is as good as you’ll find on the other side of the Adriatic).

10. Museums

The Museum of Broken Relationships, in Zagreb, features seemingly mundane and insignificant objects accompanied by captions that explain their relevance in a failed relationship. It explores the “love, pain, drama, irony, humour and reconciliation” of break-ups, and has proven so popular that a second branch opened in Los Angeles last year.

11. White stone that made the White House

In addition to the photogenic beach of Zlatni Rat, the island of Brac is famous for its glorious white stone, which was used in the construction of Diocletian’s Palace, and, far more recently, The White House in Washington DC.

12. Summer festivals

Croatia hosts numerous open-air cultural festivals during the summer, the best known being the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, staged from mid-July until mid-August and attracting well-known international performers. Tiny Motovun, a hilltop village in Istria, hosts a film festival each year, with parties held within its medieval walls each night. There are also plenty of contemporary music festivals. Some of the biggest are the Love International Festival at Tisno near Zadar, Fresh Island on Zrce beach in Novalja on the island of Pag; the Dimensions Festival and the Outlook Festival, both at Fort Punta Christo near Pula.

13. It’s the birthplace of Marco Polo

Or so claim tourist officials in Korcula, much to the annoyance of their Venetian counterparts. Whatever the truth, Korcula Town is worth visiting anyhow for its impressive medieval old town, good wines and Moreška sword dance performances.

14. One of Europe’s tastiest regions

Croatia has diverse gastronomy. Istria is famous for its wine, olive oil, homemade pasta and truffels. Dalmatia is filled with fresh herbs and fish but also famous prosciutto. Every region of Croatia has so much to offer for true food lovers.

15. Jurassic appeal

Dinosaurs were all over the Istria peninsula in the Cretaceous period (79-145 million years ago) too. You can see footprints on the isle of Veliki Brijun in Brijuni National Park. And you can go on dino-related rides at Dinopark Funtana, near Porec.

Hvar has been welcoming visitors for millennia. On the sailing route of both trade and pilgrimages, Hvar has always been a strategic point of interest, from modern sailing tourists to previous invading armies. Its history is as fascinating as the island itself.

The earliest signs of civilisation on Hvar date back to Neolithic times and the so-called Hvar Culture of 3500 – 2500 BC. These estimates by archaeologists are based on artifacts and painted pottery in the caves of Grapceva and Markova Spilija, both of which can be visited today. Examples of the finds are displayed in the excellent Heritage Museum in Hvar Town.

Given its prominent position on a busy sea route, it is perhaps surprising that the island was not settled earlier than 384 BC, when the Ancient Greeks founded the settlement of Pharos (modern-day Stari Grad). The Ionian Greeks, the Parans, were in search of a base for military and trade expansion and the deep bay at Pharos offered the best protection. While there is some evidence of Greek heritage in present-day Stari Grad, the most striking remnant is the UNESCO-protected Stari Grad Plain, a superbly preserved 80-hectare agricultural colony still in use today. Those 8 hectares of land became what is today known as HORA or AGER (“Ager Pharensis” in Roman times, or “Chora Pharou” at the time of the Greeks), and is the largest of all such plains on the Adriatic islands.

With the decline of the Syracuse Empire, Pharos enjoyed a brief period of local rule under Demetrius of Hvar, who kept the Romans at bay until they finally smashed the walls of Pharos in 229 BC. The Romans used the island as a strategic and logistical base, keeping their boats in the protected bays of the Scedro and the Pakleni Islands. Roman holiday houses sprang up in the bays close to fresh water, most notably in Hvar, Stari Grad and Jelsa. Archaeological finds confirm that the islanders were engaged in an existence of wine growing, fishing and trade.

Austrian rule was stable and brought prosperity, most notably in the development of health tourism on the island, with the founding of the Hvar Hygienic Society in 1868. The oldest meteorological station in Croatia was also established in 1858. Austrian rule also brought infrastructure improvements to the island, with all the ports rebuilt, new lighthouses, malaria-infested marshland reclaimed, and a road connecting Jelsa to Pitve and Vrisnik in 1907. The old road from Jelsa to Hvar did not appear until the 1930s, and previous travel options were ship or 8-hour donkey ride.

Hvar was named as one of the top 10 most beautiful islands in the world by readers of Conde Nast back in 1997. Major investments in the town’s hotels and the upgrading of cultural treasures such as the Arsenal and the oldest public theatre in Europe has meant that Hvar is once more a major luxury tourism destination on the Croatian coast.

Hvar, the cradle of Croatian tourism, celebrated 150th anniversary of tourism.

Hvar’s geographic position, its favourable climate, clear sea and rich cultural heritage favoured the development of the organised tourism in the distant 1868, when the Hvar Hygienic Society was founded. It was opening the gate to make it the most important branch of the town economy and bringing Hvar to the fame of a worldwide known tourist destination visited by most demanding and famous visitors from all over the world. The 150th anniversary of the oldest organised tourism in Europe was celebrated in some style in 2018.

Hvar Town

One of the jewels of Croatian tourism, Hvar Town is the capital and largest settlement of the island of the same name. Its rich Venetian architecture harks back to its glorious cultural past, while people watching on the largest square in all Dalmatia is a very popular activity today. The rich cultural heritage which includes the oldest public theatre in Europe continues today with the Hvar Summer Festival, whose locations include the Franciscan Monastery, Veneranda, the Arsenal and theatre, and Hanibal Lucic garden. Don’t forget to climb to the Spanish Fortress for fabulous views of the town and Pakleni Islands.

Hvar’s iconic waterfront, or riva, is among the most exclusive on the Adriatic, where backpackers and superyachts mingle in this most egalitarian of towns. Don’t miss the daily water taxis to the gorgeous Pakleni islands, which offer a range of activities, from beaches and nightlife, sailing and kayaking, to art galleries and fine dining.

Indulge in the restaurants and wine bars of Hvar Town, famed for their excellence in preparing local specialties such as Hvarska Gregada, as well as a wider the Mediterranean and international menu.

How to reach Hvar

Boat

Hvar is connected with the mainland by boat lines:

Split – Stari Grad; Drvenik – Sućuraj; Split – Hvar.

Catamaran connection: Split – Hvar/Hvar – Split, regularly.

Catamaran connection: Split – Jelsa/Jelsa – Split, daily.

Catamaran connection: Split Airport – Stari Grad/Stari Grad – Split, regularly (until September 15).

Ferry connection: Split – Stari Grad/Stari Grad – Split, daily, regularly.

Ferry connection: Drvenik – Sućuraj/Sućuraj – Drvenik, daily, regularly.

Hvar is connected to the mainland and other islands through four harbors, only two of which allow for cars. The main car ferry terminal is near Stari Grad, a 20-minute drive from Hvar Town, and there are regular ferries throughout the year from Split, as well as from Italy during the peak season. On the eastern tip of the island, Sućuraj has a regular 30-minute crossing to Drvenik, useful if you are coming from Dubrovnik and the south. The onward drive to Hvar Town is about 90 minutes.

Hvar Town is well served with regular catamarans to and from Split, as well as onward boats to Korčula daily, and Vis once a week. The town of Jelsa has a daily catamaran from Split via Bol. In 2019, a new private catamaran service was introduced, connecting Split Airport to Stari Grad, with a one-hour transfer.

Plane

Hvar has a small airfield in the UNESCO Stari Grad Plain. While there are no scheduled flights, private planes up to six passengers can land there. There is currently no seaplane service to the island.

PROS and CONS of living in Croatia

Unspoiled, relaxed, beautiful, and safe, Croatia is one of Europe’s loveliest treasures. Everything a discriminating visitor–or homebuyer–is looking for can be found right here: crystal-clear seas, timeless fishing villages and unspoiled beaches, Roman ruins, a pristine lake district, and medieval walled cities. Every twist and turn of the coastline serves up grandstand views of secret coves, little harbors, and calm turquoise waters. Out in the Adriatic Sea, a galaxy of islands–1,185 of them–shimmer like a cache of emeralds. The French legend Jacques Cousteau, esteemed biologist and oceanographer, once described Croatia’s waters as the cleanest and clearest in the world. But Croatia has so much more to offer. So let’s dive in to some facts about living in Croatia:

Safety

PROS: In February of 2020 Croatia was ranked at a „Level One” in safe category by the U.S. State Department which makes it on of the safest countries in the world. It was ranked 28th in the 2019 Global Peace Index, 100 places ahead of the United States (128). Croatia is also a member of EU and NATO. That means they are protected by large multi-national support structures.

CONS: It’s islands are sparsley inhabitet during the non-season periods so it can take some time while the emergency services arrive.

Climate

PROS: The coastal climate of Croatia is exquisite. Total annual sunshine hours range from 2,665 in the south around Dubrovnik to 2,409 in the north around Rovinj. Winter temperatures along the coast rarely drop below freezing and snow is infrequent.

CONS: Some may find Croatian summers too hot and dry, and winter wind bura can be strong, but homes are made of solid rock or concrete and mainly no damage.

Language

PROS: Croatian is the official language. However, a large section of the population speaks English at a high level of proficiency. The Croatian proclivity for English seems to stem from the use of Croatian subtitles for television and films. In many other countries, English is dubbed into the local language.

CONS: Learning Croatian can be challenging. The language is South Slavic in origin and is classified as a “Category III” language by the U.S. State Department. These “hard” languages have large cultural and linguistic differences when compared to English. However, the Croatians are incredibly friendly and patient. They will be very pleased to help you learn the language.

Cost of Living

PROS: Croatia’s cost of living varies dramatically depending on location. It will also fluctuate based on your consumption habits and housing requirements. The good news is that if you shop at local markets, you’ll find incredible deals on delicious food and wine. Depending upon the season, you might even be able to buy seafood right from a fisherman’s boat. Or, if you visit a green market, it’s possible to pick up a bag of fresh figs, tangerines, quince, pomegranates, or kiwi for a fraction of the supermarket price. Also, more discount stores are piling into Croatia after it joined the European Union in 2013. This means increased competition and reduced prices. Long term rent of an apartment is double cheaper than other EU countries. monthly utility bills are double lower than western EU countries. There is no property tax in Croatia! Fresh organic fruits and vegetables you can buy at cheap price directly from producers. Dental services are 100% cheaper than in EU countries. Private health care is cheaper and public health care is higher standard then in EU countries.

CONS: Croatia has an onerous web of taxes and regulations. As a result, it may be difficult to get things done. Be sure to enlist the help of local friends and professionals for larger purchases.

Quality of Life

PROS: Croatia has one of the most enviable lifestyles in the world. The Croatians place considerable value on spending quality time with family and friends. The Croatians relish a good cup of coffee in the Dalmatian sunshine. The waterfront cafes of most coastal towns are regularly filled with socializing kava drinkers. On the weekends, Croatians also fire up an incredible BBQ dish called peka. This regional specialty takes several hours to cook under hot coals.

Croatia is well connected with rest of the Europe, by 8 airports (population of Croatia is less than 4 million people), high quality highways and roads, more than 300 departures and arrivals DAILY from the Croatian islands to the number of ports along the Croatian coast.
High speed internet and mobile net is available in every corner of Croatia, even on distant islands.
Climate is great advantage of Croatia, Mediterranean climate – mild winters with a lots of sunny days and dry warm summers, attract a lots of retirees to buy home on the coast or the islands of Croatia.
Organic food is everyday on the table of average Croatian.
Croatia is so small that every corner is easy accessed within few hours drive through the beautiful landscapes that many European poets described and admired.
Beauty of Croatian pure and well preserved nature with number of protected National Parks, Nature Parks and protected localities, enrich life of everyone who lives here and most of these natural treasures people enjoy without any charges, tickets or restrictions.

CONS: The quality of life in Croatia can be hard to beat, even with bureaucracy obstacles one could face but that’s what Croatian friends are for, to help get through the processes smoothly and quickly.

Medical Care

PROS: If you decide to live in Croatia for longer than three months, you will be required to contribute to the national health insurance system. The system provides universal coverage to the entire population. Croatian health care public system is very efficient and very cheap!

CONS: Croatian healthcare workers often go to other EU countries with higher salaries.

Activities & Recreation

PROS: Croatia’s bountiful sunshine and warm weather make it an ideal destination for outdoor activities. With over 1,000 islands, it has a wealth of exciting sailing, snorkeling, and scuba opportunities, river rafting, safari, kite surfing in windy cannals between the islands, paragliding, all kind of sports on the water, and also on the mountains. In same day you can skii on the Croatian mountain and swim in the Croatian sea. The rugged coastal topography of Croatia is perfect for hiking and for wine and olive cultivation. It is also densely packed with fascinating historical sites. Variety of gastronomic experiences is Croatian advantage, here you can enjoy Mediterranean cuisine, but also continental and oriental, thanks to the influences left from times when these regions were ruled by old Romans, Greeks, Byzant, Venetians…

CONS: Croatia is summer destination therefore many recreational activities that can be enjoyed only in summer time, can not be used during the winter months.

Weddings on the Croatian coast

Croatia is famous for its beauty and as such has endlessly diverse wedding venues and locations. There is something for every type of a couple, either you are a tradition lover or you are seeking for beach vibe wedding, we promise that Croatia won’t disappoint you. You’ll be amazed with its ancient churches, palaces as well with its untouched nature, greenery, beaches and unforgettable sunsets. Here are some of the famous locations:

SPLIT

Split’s most famous location is Diocletian’s palace bursting in history. It’s quite amazing to see a city the size of Split having the heart of ancient Rome, complete with peristyle, imposing stone columns and city walls. The important factor for some may be the fact that Split is easily accessible via its international airport, so it can get quite busy during peak season. The solution is to find refuge in its many hidden venues that are off the beaten path, like Marjan park with its perfectly positioned Benedict (Bene) restaurant, hiding under the pine trees on the western seafront. But if you decide to get married in Diocletian’s palace the best time of the day is at the dawn, before all the hustle.

DUBROVNIK

Dubrovnik is home to probably the most popular Croatian wedding venues. It is a pearl among wedding locations with its city walls, terraces, historical churches and stone streets. More traditional couples can choose between 6 ancient churches in Old Town. Dubrovnik is also full of extraordinary villas that guarantee privacy. You can check some of them here! Choices are endless in Dubrovnik. You can choose to get married in Uvala Lapad that is situated in a more peaceful part of the town and surrounded with olive trees and sound of crashing waves or pick the viewpoint of park Orsula that overlooks all of Dubrovnik. For history lovers Sponza Palace is ideal place to say their I do’s. It was built in 16th century and it is a mix pg Gothic and Renaissance style. It is located in the heart of Dubrovnik Old Town. Then there is The Rector’s Palace, a gothic palace with renaissance-baroque reconstructions. Today it is the Museum of Dubrovnik, and in its beautiful atrium classical concerts are held during Dubrovnik Summer Festival. The gorgeous stone staircase with stone balustrade makes the atrium’s coulisse within which your wedding could evoke memories of past times. If you are not already impressed, there are another options like city fortresses Lovrijenac and Saint John that offer a heightened and unforgettable experience.

LOKRUM

Lokrum is an island situated 15 min boat ride from Dubrovnik Old Town. It is known for its untouched nature, lush green pine forests and crystal clear sea. It has also an arboretum with cultivated gardens. Most famous one is palm garden on the southern side of island. There is an ancient Dominican monastery which offers perfect backdrop for your ceremony. Of all the Croatian wedding venues, Lokrum is specific because there are no inhabitants on the island (by design, not by chance), so it has this relaxed sunny vibe and as far as weddings go, it’s very much off the beaten path.

KOLOČEP

Koločep is the first in the series of Elaphiti islands in southern Adriatic, taking around half an hour to reach by boat. It’s a really small island, just big enough for two villages and around a million pine and olive trees. It’s small, quiet and like Lokrum has no inhabitants. There are amazing walking paths through its makija bushes and pine trees leading to some spectacular places like Bezdanj, a natural cave connecting open sea with a small pool amongst the rocks.

LOPUD

Second of the Elaphiti islands, Lopud is another hidden gem among Croatian wedding venues, taking around 1h to reach by boat. It’s still close enough to be practical, yet far enough that most of the tourist crowds won’t bother to reach it. Just like Koločep and Lokrum, it’s inhabited. It is made of untouched nature and walking paths. It’s also home to the largest sandy beach in the southern Adriatic – Šunj. There are couple of locations in Lopud for wedding ceremonies such as waterfront church Gospa od Šunja and its garden or the botanical garden for a civil ceremony or numerous of island villas.

ZADAR

Zadar is is the oldest continuously-inhabited Croatian city that features a beautifully preserved old city core on a small peninsula, complete with stone streets, houses and churches. There are amazing stone courts between houses, rose bushes, rustic gardens and ornamented balconies. Zadar is famous for three things. It is said to have the most beautiful sunsets in Europe. It features Monument to the Sun (a mixture of artistic installation and photovoltaic panels built into the stone). And finally, it’s perpetually bathed in the sounds of the sea organ which the incoming waves randomly play, creating a cacophony of notes that varies with the weather and winds. Zadar’s Arsenal is actually an old armoury converted into a reception venue/museum and it is very popular for weddings.

Find your villa in Zadar here.

HVAR

Hvar is among other most popular Croatian wedding venues. It’s famous for being the sunniest island in the Adriatic, with mean yearly sunshine hours simply off the charts (more than 2.700!). Hvar is known for its local delicacies and wine, but also its party and club scene, making it the ultimate destination for hedonists and younger crowds. Most popular ceremony venues include church of St. Mark’s and the Franciscan monastery. Both are secular venues for civil ceremonies. You can also pick different types of venues such as op of mount St. Nicholas or Gališnik island just outside main port of Hvar. Considering the fact that Hvar is a filled with tourists during the summer season maybe you can pick a wedding date in late spring or early autumn when the weather is warm enough and its lavender fields are in full bloom, colouring the air with the aroma of ripe lavender flowers and the buzz of bees fiesting on the sweet nectar.

Find your wedding villa on island Hvar here.

KORČULA

Korčula is big Croatian island and one of those lesser known Croatian wedding locations that rightly deserves the title of the hidden gem of Adriatic. Korcula is the home of high-end olive oil and wine in Croatia, which goes hand in hand with its fish-based cuisine, all of which are guarantees of an unforgettable wedding dinner. Korcula has a number of smaller islands very near it, if you really want to get away and have an island just for yourselves. Prime examples are island of Proizd (just off the west coast of Korcula) and islet of Vela Stupa (on the eastern side of the island). Proizd can be turned into a private island after dark, when the last official boat returns to main island — all you need is a private boat to take you back after you’re done partying in the island’s only restaurant.

Find your wedding villa on island Korcula here.

MAKARSKA

Makarska is a small town under the huge mountain of Biokovo in southern Dalmatia. It’s very popular in the peak season, but a great place to get married in late spring and early autumn if you’re looking for something that isn’t as logistically demanding as an island wedding. The contrast of the majestic mountain peaks on one side and Adriatic on the other is just perfect, often spiced up by cotton-white clouds hanging about. There’s also plenty of accommodation for any size of your wedding party, whether it’s hotels or villas you’re after.

Find your wedding villa in Makarska here.

VIS

Vis is island of vineyards that bursts with authenticity. It is distanced from Split port around two and a half hours ferry ride. Food there is equally par excellence, based in large part on locally caught seafood. The most famous wedding venue on island Vis is fort George, an old British fortress on top of a hill turned into a fine restaurant. Pine trees on the main terrace create amazing natural shade, which is very much appreciated during hot summer months. There is also Komiža, a town well worth visiting at the other end of the island, even smaller and beautifully picturesque. If you’re after an experience for you and your guests, starting with a long sail among Croatian islands to all kinds of tasty and authentic experiences, island of Vis is a great pick of your Croatian wedding venue.

Find your wedding villa on island Vis here.

BRIJUNI

On the southwest part of Istria is truly one of the treasures. It is made od 12 small islands on which from ancient times were located many luxurious villas and estates. It is also a national park and it is said that Brijuni are true oasis of well synchronized wildlife. There are many attractions and beauties in the offer of this park. You can take a tourist train ride trough safari-park, see luxurious villa in bay Verige, see some of the exhibitions that are set up there and maybe take a trip to archaeological museum. Brijuni are truly one of the most magical places for organizing a wedding. Imagine that you are exchanging vows in the fabulously decorated St. German’s Church from the 15th century to the romantic sounds of the flute and violin, while your loved ones are next to you. You can take photographs at important archaeological sites, alongside the 1600-year-old olive tree, in a picturesque Mediterranean garden or in one of the numerous bays with crystal clear waters, filled with strong scents of pine and laurel.

RAB

Island Rab is situated up north on Croatian coast. Town of Rab is known among its residents as the “small Dubrovnik”, with a bit of city walls creating a barrier on the small peninsula it’s situated on. What it lacks in extensive city walls, it more than makes up with the beautiful shallow turquoise waters and long walking trails along the sea. The whole island is relaxed and slow paced, perfect for those who are seeking peaceful wedding vibes.

Why should you include Croatia on your wish list in 2021?

We can all agree that 2020 was totally unpredictable year that shook the economy, especially tourism industry. Full of history and its natural wonders, Croatia has been ranked among the 20 most desirable destinations in 2021, according to the survey conducted by The US Virtuoso association of travel agencies that organize luxury travel. It’s also been published that Croatian National Tourist Board and the European Association of Travel Agencies and Tour Operators (ECTAA) have signed an agreement by which Croatia will have the status of “Preferred Destination” in 2021, i.e., the “Selected Destinations” of the umbrella European Association of Travel Agencies and Tour Operators. Also, USA Today, one of the most popular American dailies, published a list of the 100 most desirable travel destinations in 2021, and Croatia sits in the high 11th place. Travel Daily News portal in the article “Below Deck Mediterranean: Most Instagrammable locations” mentioned Croatia, where among the most beautiful locations around the world alongside Santorini, Capri, Cannes and Mallorca, is beautiful Dubrovnik.

The emphasis will go to the safety and proximity of Croatia as a tourist destination, the richness of Croatian tourism, unique heritage, beautiful nature, and diverse gastronomy, highlighting the diversity of travel and tourism products that the country offers. CNTB and ECTAA will work hand in hand to not only promote Croatia as one of the most attractive destinations in Europe but also as one of the safest. Next year, Black Tomato predicts Croatia to be quieter than ever. Devoid of the usual cruise ships and throngs of tourists, Spring 2021 offers a rare chance to have this usually-heaving destination all to oneself, making it a top destination for 2021.

Croatian National Tourist Board (CNTB) is currently implementing a new campaign for Croatian tourism in 2021 across social media, called “Croatia Full of New Beginnings” combined with the label Croatia Wish List 2021, which aims to promote Croatia through new beginnings and positive wishes. Goal is to maintain the visibility and presence of Croatia on its most important emitting markets by presenting more undiscovered locations and proposals for planning a holiday.

In addition to the above, according to Lonely Planet, here are some reasons to visit Croatia in 2021.:

Coastal Croatia

Croatia’s extraordinary island-speckled coastline is indisputably its main attraction. The first thing that strikes you is the remarkable clarity of the water. When it’s set against a dazzling white pebbly beach, the water sparkles with a jewel-like intensity in shades of emerald and sapphire. But Croatia does not offer only sandy and pebble beaches. For those who worship pure nature there are plenty of rocky beaches and secret coves. On top of that, adventurous visitors can enjoy water-based activities like snorkelling, diving, kayaking, windsurfing and sailing.

The Edge of Empires

Precariously poised between the Balkans and central Europe, Croatia sits on a land that has been passed between competing kingdoms, empires and republics for millennia. If there’s an upside to this continual dislocation, it’s in the rich cultural legacy that each has left behind. Venetian palaces snuggle up to Napoleonic forts, Roman columns protrude from early Slavic churches, and Viennese mansions face off with Socialist Realist sculpture. Excellent museums showcase treasures that cover the gamut of European history, from the prehistoric to the post communist, telling a story that is in equal parts fascinating and horrifying.

Beauty on the Inside

Shift your gaze for just a moment from the glittering waters and chances are an almighty mountain will loom into view. The Dinaric Range, which stretches all the way from Italy to Albania, hugs much of the coast. The limestone karst has bequeathed a wonderland of craggy peaks, caverns, river canyons, waterfalls and ridiculously picturesque lakes. Head further inland and things flatten out again into rolling farmland. Active types will find plenty of chances to get among it on the numerous hiking and biking trails, while the more adventurous can have a go at rock climbing, rafting and zip-lining. Croatia counts 8 National Parks and 12 Nature Parks!

Cultural Feast

If you’re lucky enough to cross the tourist/guest barrier and be invited into a local’s home, you’ll soon become acquainted with the refrain ‘Jedi! Jedi! Jedi!’ (Eat! Eat! Eat!). Sharing food and drink plays a big part in the culture here, which speaks both to the nature of Croatian hospitality and to the quality of local produce. Simple, home style cooking is a feature of family-run taverns, but increasingly a new breed of chefs are bringing a more adventurous approach to the table. Meanwhile, Croatian wines and olive oils are making their mark on the world stage, garnering top awards. The diversity of Croatian cuisine provides something satisfying for everyone.

Croatia’s top destinations in 2021

Traveling around Croatia guarantees you a unique and memorable holiday experience. While everyone has now heard of Split, Zadar, Sibenik and Dubrovnik here are some of the less famous, but equally beautiful destinations.

Ston

Ston is a small town on Peljesac Peninsula, situated about 54 km from Dubrovnik. Ston is by and large known for three things – its very well preserved town walls, its salt works, and its mussels. The walls are much longer than those of its more famous neighbour, Dubrovnik, at 5 km in length. This makes them the longest defensive structure in Europe; they are sometimes referred to as the ‘European Walls of China”. It is known as a gourmet paradise. From archeological traces the waters of Mali Ston bay from ancient times, cultivated oysters and ate in honor of Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty born from shells.

Book our villa in Ston here.

Milna on island Brac

Milna or as the Venetians called it “Valle di mille navi” (the bay of a thousand ships) is located on the north-west side of the island. Milna is one of those typical Mediterranean fishing villages they don’t make anymore. Lying on the west coast of Brac Island and 20 km southwest of Supetar, the harbour of Milna is drop-dead gorgeous as it digs into the island like a spoon. To each side of the harbour stretch sand and pebble beaches including the cove of Vlaska. Stone houses along the beautiful long coastline are small masterpieces of plebeian architecture.

Book our villa in Milna here.

Island Vis

In many ways, Vis is the most fascinating of all the Croatian islands. You should visit Vis primarily for the reason that the island was closed to tourism for so long, but also because of its location, it’s often considered somewhere for an “off-the-beaten-track” holiday in Croatia or a great place to go to try something a bit different – especially for a peaceful and relaxing break. Along the coast of the island of Vis there are numerous small bays and coves, with modern houses which offer private accommodation in apartments and holiday houses. If we add to this unique historical, cultural, and natural heritage the beautiful crystal clear sea, stunning hidden beaches, bays and islands, kind hosts and comfortable accommodation in private houses and apartments , it is clear why Vis is the favourite tourist destination for those visitors who want to try the unique and almost gone authentic Mediterranean environment and way of life. Viška and Komiška pogača (pies Vis or Komiža style), the two savoury queens of the gastronomic side of the island, are favourite and unavoidable traditional island dishes.
