Which tourist attractions to visit?
You are planning your trip and are wondering what attractions you can see in Split? Here is a list of fascinating things you can visit.

HOW OLD IS DIOCLETIAN PALACE IN SPLIT?

A walk through the ancient city can take you through time, so prepare yourselves to go to fourth century AD. The Diocletian’s palace is among the best preserved monuments of the Roman building heritage in the world. Today, after 1700 years, the remains of the palace are part of the historic core of Split, which in 1979 was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. A thing you can’t find anywhere in the world is a fact that people still live and work inside the palace. The citizens of Split over centuries have been keeping the tradition of living the life inside the palace, adapting it a bit to modern life needs, but the outlines of the palace remained untouched. The outside architecture of the palace with its stone walls is consisted of sixteen towers projecting form every side of the palace. Inside the palace you can see the emperors apartments, living space, squares, churches, museums, shops, restaurants, etc. Do not miss out the chance to visit the Cellars of the Diocletian’s Palace, and to take a walk trough the filming locations of the Game of Thrones series.

Which SACRAL FACILITIES are in Split?

Croatians are Catolics. Country has a great heritage of sacral facilities. Therefore Split as a second largest city in modern Croatia and one of the oldest cities in Europe takes a big pride in its sacral heritage. Many of its churches and monastery’s are located in reach of the city center.

Church and Monastery of St. Francis is built in the old early Christian site located on the Western part of the Riva, just a few steps from the outside walls of the Diocletian’s palace. In the 13th century the Little brothers of St Francis inhabit the Church and have been living and serving there since then. In the Church and the Monastery are located the thumbs of prominent citizens of Split, like the father of Croatian literature Marko Marulić, and one of the greatest Croatian politicians Ante Trumbić, whose sarcophagus is the work of famous Croatian sculpturer Ivan Meštović.

Franciscan Church and Monastery of St. Anthony is built in the 11th century on the north side of the Split peninsula. A cloister with a square tower on the west side was a part of defense complex protecting the church and the monastery from the Turkish invasion. In the 18th century bell tower was added on the south side of the church. This complex is home to many valuable artworks and historic documents, among which is an image made by Venetian master Girolama de Santa Crocea in 1549 showing the city as it lays in the hands of its patron St. Domnius. Maybe an even more interesting thing is a rare description of Islamic prophet Muhammad, whose character should not be shown according to Koran.

Church of Holy Trinity is situated near the above mentioned Franciscan Church, at the proximity of Poljud stadium. This is a small but adorable church built between the 8th and 11th century. It is a six foil type of building with semicircular arches lined around an irregular circle. This church has been added into the register of the most valuable Croatian Cultural Heritage, of the highest category.

Church of St. Philip Neri A pastor of Split and a Bishop of Makarska together decided in 1672 to establish a Philippine congregation and build a church dedicated to St. Philip Neri. They decided to build it on the site of the Papalić house, which was donated by the nobleman Frane Soppe Papalić, together with another two houses bought beside it. The building of the church began in 1679 and was finished the year after. This is a modest, simple church, but very sacral and peaceful.

Church of St. Martin is in the northern part of the Diocletian Palace, within the wall over the Golden Gate. The Church today is a replica of an early Christian Church from the 6th century, with a pre-romanesque altar partition from the 11th century. This smallest and one of the oldest churches in Split is only 1.64m wide and 10m long, and is considered the most preserved sacral monument. Its location was originally used as a passageway for the guards guarding the northern entrance to the Diocletian Palace and later was converted to church.

Small Churches on the Marjan Hill
If there is anything determining Marjan, hill-symbol on the west side of the Split peninsula, just as much as its dense pine forest, countless trails and recreational facilities, is a series of Marjan small churches and chapels. Built during the time when Marjan was a spiritual haven for the citizens of Split who expressed their faith by going on a pilgrimage to their holly hill. Those sometimes miniature churches were one of the most important witnesses of the way life developed in Split. For those fond of taking nature walks, tour of this spiritual circle can be a great opportunity for sightseeing Marjan and enjoying the peace offered by this hill to the citizens of Split and their guests.

Which are famous SQUARES in Split?

Since medieval time squares have been a place where people get together, socialize and go to buy their needed groceries. That culture in Split hasn’t vanished, people still get together there, drink coffee, go shopping. Some of the most magnificent squares here are Prokurative, Pjaca and Vocni Trg (Fruits square). They are all well preserved and reflect the ancient spirit that was once there.

Prokurative is a square located west of the Riva. Name of this square comes from its neo-Renaissance buildings surrounding the square on tree sides. It is built on the idea to resemble Venice St. Marks Square. The square is only open on the south side providing a beautiful view of the harbor and the waterfront. It is a beautiful place to drink coffee, have lunch, relax and to take photos!
Pjaca or People’s Square is first mentioned in 13th century as first inhabited part of Split outside the Diocletian Palace, leaning to its western wall. On the outskirts of the Pjaca lived the noble families of Split. Already for centuries the Pjaca is the central stage of the city life. There in the Gothic building of the Old Town Hall, today an exhibition center, was the seat of the city’s authority, and is still beautiful and preserved. The city clock has been ticking for centuries on Pjaca, unique by his 24 instead of 12 digits. In the surrounding cafes, restaurants and bars the citizens of Split could always find a place to rest, meet, be seen and see others, go through the most important events of the city. Every building on Pjaca has its story, each is a witness of history and the spirit of the city.
Voćni trg (Fruit square) is maybe the most beautiful one in the city. It got its name by the colorful market where women from surrounding villages came to sell their fruit. There are several landmarks decorating this not so large square. The biggest is definitely the Venetian tower, the leftover of the former fortress built in 15th century. Surrounding facades built in Baroque style give a picturesque sense of the old times. The statue of Marko Marulić in the center of square celebrates the most important Croatian philosopher and intellectual of 15th century. Square is thriving with city life in bars, restaurants and exclusive shops.
Riva is definitely a must see, or even better said, a must experience in Split. This promenade is a heart and soul of Split. You must have heard a well known sentence “All roads lead to Rome”, well, the citizens of Split often say that all roads lead to Riva. In any hour of the day you will always find people sitting, drinking coffee, dining, relaxing. In the evening it converts to a great location for spending a night out with your friends. It is a center and a great starting point to explore city’s offer. Located on the entrance to the Diocletian Palace it is a venue for numerous cultural and entertainment events. The time when Riva and the whole city reaches all of its glory is definitely Sudamja, a celebration dedicated to St. Dominius, the patron saint of Split. It is celebrated in the beginning of May, and if you are planning your trip to Croatia in off season we recommend visiting Split at this time.

Which NATURAL BEAUTIES are in SPLIT?

Split is a city of natural beauty! If you are wondering how one urban big city can be filled with natural and well preserved surrounding, you can find an answer right here in Split.

Marjan, the hill that overlooks the city has always been the most impressive part of Split imagery. Such a harmony between natural and urban is rarely found; on one side the densely populated city in all of its glory, and on the other a peninsula of almost pristine nature, a protected Forrest park. A climb up to Marjan is easily accessible from Riva and is easy to get to. You can go by foot or by a car, but take in mind if you are going by car you can have problems finding a parking space and the road takes you only half way to the peak. If you are going on foot, it is an easy walk up the well arranged walkway among which there are few sceneries overlooking the city and the nearby islands Brač, Hvar, Šolta.
Marjan offers to its visitors peace and tranquility, recreation and entertainment with natural beaches, pathways and trim-trails among which are many sacral churches and secular architecture.
If you are looking for a place from which Split can be seen in all of its glory, but you also want to experience entirely different side of this densely populated and tourism oriented city, visit Marjan.

Sustipan, the first Split’s cemetery at that time, is located on the southwest cape of the Split harbor. Do not be frightened by the fact that it was a cemetery because in the past it was demolished and turned into a glorious park, a little green oasis in proximity of Marjan. The reefs of Sustipan meet the sea giving you a breathtaking view towards deep sea and the islands in front of Split.

Where are THE BEACHES in SPLIT?

Split as an urban city has a surprising clean sea and diverse beaches in its offer. If you are seeking quiet and natural ones try out Bene or Kašjuni beaches. Both are located on the Marjan hill, a protected Forrest park which reeks of fresh air and smell of century old pines. Get away from the city rush and enjoy the peace.
Bene is a beach very suitable for families because of its offer. It is filled with numerous additional facilities; a restaurant, tennis courts, playgrounds for children, showers, changing cabins, etc. Next to the beach is a part adapted for disabled, including a lift aiding the disabled on their way into the sea.
Kašjuni located on the west part of the Marjan hill is popular for families with children. The beach has a shallow waters, small pebble stones, a coffee shop and a changing cabins.

If you want to go to the beach that is not far from the urban part, we recommend you to try beaches Bačvice, Firule and Žnjan. Regardless to its distance to the livable part of the city, once you get there you won’t even have feeling that you are in approximate intermediate of the city.
Bačvice is a phenomenon of nature, a sandy beach at the heart of the city, in the vicinity of the city harbor. It can accommodate over ten thousand people and often it is called a Split version of Copacabana. Bačvice today represents a best known promenade for all generations, and during night it is a favorite center of nightlife.
Firule with its fine sand and natural shelter have always proven to be especially interesting for families with young children. A recreational side of Firule grew more popular as the tennis center was organized here. Many of popular Croatian tennis players like Goran Ivanišević and Mario Ančić learned their first serves here.
Žnjan became very popular among the citizens of Split with the arrival of John Paul II to Split in 1998. In that year it was well landscaped for his arrival and to this day is well maintained.
Besides being an ideal promenade and a leisure destination for the citizens of Split, it thrives with restaurants, bars, coffee shops, playgrounds, trampolines for children and other facilities.

15 reasons to book your vacation in Croatia:

1. Easy to reach

Some Greek islands take four hours to reach by plane. The Canaries? More like four-and-a-half. Hvar, Split, Dubrovnik and Pula are all just two-and-a-half hours away or less.

2. Hot weather

Croatia is one of Europe’s sunniest spots. Visitors should expect 12 hours of sunshine a day in May and June, on average, and 13 in July and August. Even in October, the weather remains pleasant, with Dubrovnik offering 11 hours of sunlight and daily averages of 19C.

3. Good value

Even in popular tourist destinations you can still find good value. A beer at all but the trendiest bars in Hvar will only cost the equivalent of a couple of quid; dinner for two at a good restaurant in Split (including wine) will set you back less than 60 EUR. Good value hotels are ubiquitous, as are cheap holiday apartments.

4. Game of Thrones

There is surely some correlation between Croatia’s growing popularity and its starring role in the HBO series Game of Thrones. Among the attractions to have featured are Dubrovnik, whose city walls and forts became King’s Landing; beautiful Trsteno Arboretum on the outskirts of the city, which becomes the Red Keep’s gardens; the Fortress of Klis, which is used for exterior shots of Meereen; and St Dominic Monastery in Trogir, which appears as the city of Qarth.

5. Roman ruins

The remains of Diocletian’s Palace in Split, another Game of Thrones filming location, is now the buzzing heart of the city. Among the ancient columns, temples, walls and underground cellars that once made up the Roman emperor’s retirement home, you’ll find dozens of hidden bars, restaurants and shops.

6. Pula amphiteatre

The port city of Pula in Istria is noted for its first-century Roman amphitheatre, one of the best preserved in the world. Time your visit to the city to coincide with its annual film festival (held in July, next week, as it stands), which features screenings inside the ruin, or look out for one of its regular musical concerts.

7. Magnificent beaches

Croatia is all about picturesque pebbled beaches, lapped by crystal clear water. Zlatni Rat is the best known, and adorns just about every travel brochure, so expect crowds, but there are gorgeous hidden spots on the mainland, such as Nugal, just south of Makarska.

8. National parks

Croatia has eight national parks, including the Unesco-listed Plitvice Lakes and Krka, both of which are famous for their stunning lakes and waterfalls.

9. Beautiful mountains

The Biokovo mountain range contains Croatia’s second highest peak – Sveti Jure, at 1762 m – but lies just a few miles from the sea. Rise early and follow the steep zig-zagging trail, from the little village of Makar, just above the beach resort of Makarska, up to the peak of Vosac (1422 m), or, if you’re feeling very energetic, Sveti Jure. It’s a spellbinding route, scattered with wildflowers and butterflies, sweet-smelling pine trees and limestone boulders. Then head back down for a refreshing dip in the sea and a well earned gelato (the ice cream here is as good as you’ll find on the other side of the Adriatic).

10. Museums

The Museum of Broken Relationships, in Zagreb, features seemingly mundane and insignificant objects accompanied by captions that explain their relevance in a failed relationship. It explores the “love, pain, drama, irony, humour and reconciliation” of break-ups, and has proven so popular that a second branch opened in Los Angeles last year.

11. White stone that made the White House

In addition to the photogenic beach of Zlatni Rat, the island of Brac is famous for its glorious white stone, which was used in the construction of Diocletian’s Palace, and, far more recently, The White House in Washington DC.

12. Summer festivals

Croatia hosts numerous open-air cultural festivals during the summer, the best known being the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, staged from mid-July until mid-August and attracting well-known international performers. Tiny Motovun, a hilltop village in Istria, hosts a film festival each year, with parties held within its medieval walls each night. There are also plenty of contemporary music festivals. Some of the biggest are the Love International Festival at Tisno near Zadar, Fresh Island on Zrce beach in Novalja on the island of Pag; the Dimensions Festival and the Outlook Festival, both at Fort Punta Christo near Pula.

13. It’s the birthplace of Marco Polo

Or so claim tourist officials in Korcula, much to the annoyance of their Venetian counterparts. Whatever the truth, Korcula Town is worth visiting anyhow for its impressive medieval old town, good wines and Moreška sword dance performances.

14. One of Europe’s tastiest regions

Croatia has diverse gastronomy. Istria is famous for its wine, olive oil, homemade pasta and truffels. Dalmatia is filled with fresh herbs and fish but also famous prosciutto. Every region of Croatia has so much to offer for true food lovers.

15. Jurassic appeal

Dinosaurs were all over the Istria peninsula in the Cretaceous period (79-145 million years ago) too. You can see footprints on the isle of Veliki Brijun in Brijuni National Park. And you can go on dino-related rides at Dinopark Funtana, near Porec.

Why should you include Croatia on your wish list in 2021?

We can all agree that 2020 was totally unpredictable year that shook the economy, especially tourism industry. Full of history and its natural wonders, Croatia has been ranked among the 20 most desirable destinations in 2021, according to the survey conducted by The US Virtuoso association of travel agencies that organize luxury travel. It’s also been published that Croatian National Tourist Board and the European Association of Travel Agencies and Tour Operators (ECTAA) have signed an agreement by which Croatia will have the status of “Preferred Destination” in 2021, i.e., the “Selected Destinations” of the umbrella European Association of Travel Agencies and Tour Operators. Also, USA Today, one of the most popular American dailies, published a list of the 100 most desirable travel destinations in 2021, and Croatia sits in the high 11th place. Travel Daily News portal in the article “Below Deck Mediterranean: Most Instagrammable locations” mentioned Croatia, where among the most beautiful locations around the world alongside Santorini, Capri, Cannes and Mallorca, is beautiful Dubrovnik.

The emphasis will go to the safety and proximity of Croatia as a tourist destination, the richness of Croatian tourism, unique heritage, beautiful nature, and diverse gastronomy, highlighting the diversity of travel and tourism products that the country offers. CNTB and ECTAA will work hand in hand to not only promote Croatia as one of the most attractive destinations in Europe but also as one of the safest. Next year, Black Tomato predicts Croatia to be quieter than ever. Devoid of the usual cruise ships and throngs of tourists, Spring 2021 offers a rare chance to have this usually-heaving destination all to oneself, making it a top destination for 2021.

Croatian National Tourist Board (CNTB) is currently implementing a new campaign for Croatian tourism in 2021 across social media, called “Croatia Full of New Beginnings” combined with the label Croatia Wish List 2021, which aims to promote Croatia through new beginnings and positive wishes. Goal is to maintain the visibility and presence of Croatia on its most important emitting markets by presenting more undiscovered locations and proposals for planning a holiday.

In addition to the above, according to Lonely Planet, here are some reasons to visit Croatia in 2021.:

Coastal Croatia

Croatia’s extraordinary island-speckled coastline is indisputably its main attraction. The first thing that strikes you is the remarkable clarity of the water. When it’s set against a dazzling white pebbly beach, the water sparkles with a jewel-like intensity in shades of emerald and sapphire. But Croatia does not offer only sandy and pebble beaches. For those who worship pure nature there are plenty of rocky beaches and secret coves. On top of that, adventurous visitors can enjoy water-based activities like snorkelling, diving, kayaking, windsurfing and sailing.

The Edge of Empires

Precariously poised between the Balkans and central Europe, Croatia sits on a land that has been passed between competing kingdoms, empires and republics for millennia. If there’s an upside to this continual dislocation, it’s in the rich cultural legacy that each has left behind. Venetian palaces snuggle up to Napoleonic forts, Roman columns protrude from early Slavic churches, and Viennese mansions face off with Socialist Realist sculpture. Excellent museums showcase treasures that cover the gamut of European history, from the prehistoric to the post communist, telling a story that is in equal parts fascinating and horrifying.

Beauty on the Inside

Shift your gaze for just a moment from the glittering waters and chances are an almighty mountain will loom into view. The Dinaric Range, which stretches all the way from Italy to Albania, hugs much of the coast. The limestone karst has bequeathed a wonderland of craggy peaks, caverns, river canyons, waterfalls and ridiculously picturesque lakes. Head further inland and things flatten out again into rolling farmland. Active types will find plenty of chances to get among it on the numerous hiking and biking trails, while the more adventurous can have a go at rock climbing, rafting and zip-lining. Croatia counts 8 National Parks and 12 Nature Parks!

Cultural Feast

If you’re lucky enough to cross the tourist/guest barrier and be invited into a local’s home, you’ll soon become acquainted with the refrain ‘Jedi! Jedi! Jedi!’ (Eat! Eat! Eat!). Sharing food and drink plays a big part in the culture here, which speaks both to the nature of Croatian hospitality and to the quality of local produce. Simple, home style cooking is a feature of family-run taverns, but increasingly a new breed of chefs are bringing a more adventurous approach to the table. Meanwhile, Croatian wines and olive oils are making their mark on the world stage, garnering top awards. The diversity of Croatian cuisine provides something satisfying for everyone.

Croatia’s top destinations in 2021

Traveling around Croatia guarantees you a unique and memorable holiday experience. While everyone has now heard of Split, Zadar, Sibenik and Dubrovnik here are some of the less famous, but equally beautiful destinations.

Ston

Ston is a small town on Peljesac Peninsula, situated about 54 km from Dubrovnik. Ston is by and large known for three things – its very well preserved town walls, its salt works, and its mussels. The walls are much longer than those of its more famous neighbour, Dubrovnik, at 5 km in length. This makes them the longest defensive structure in Europe; they are sometimes referred to as the ‘European Walls of China”. It is known as a gourmet paradise. From archeological traces the waters of Mali Ston bay from ancient times, cultivated oysters and ate in honor of Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty born from shells.

Book our villa in Ston here.

Milna on island Brac

Milna or as the Venetians called it “Valle di mille navi” (the bay of a thousand ships) is located on the north-west side of the island. Milna is one of those typical Mediterranean fishing villages they don’t make anymore. Lying on the west coast of Brac Island and 20 km southwest of Supetar, the harbour of Milna is drop-dead gorgeous as it digs into the island like a spoon. To each side of the harbour stretch sand and pebble beaches including the cove of Vlaska. Stone houses along the beautiful long coastline are small masterpieces of plebeian architecture.

Book our villa in Milna here.

Island Vis

In many ways, Vis is the most fascinating of all the Croatian islands. You should visit Vis primarily for the reason that the island was closed to tourism for so long, but also because of its location, it’s often considered somewhere for an “off-the-beaten-track” holiday in Croatia or a great place to go to try something a bit different – especially for a peaceful and relaxing break. Along the coast of the island of Vis there are numerous small bays and coves, with modern houses which offer private accommodation in apartments and holiday houses. If we add to this unique historical, cultural, and natural heritage the beautiful crystal clear sea, stunning hidden beaches, bays and islands, kind hosts and comfortable accommodation in private houses and apartments , it is clear why Vis is the favourite tourist destination for those visitors who want to try the unique and almost gone authentic Mediterranean environment and way of life. Viška and Komiška pogača (pies Vis or Komiža style), the two savoury queens of the gastronomic side of the island, are favourite and unavoidable traditional island dishes. Pogača is a type of a savoury pie, made of dough, salted anchovies or sardines, fine tomato stuffing, onions and fresh herbs.

Primosten
